Program Overview

Parasites are widespread throughout the living world, and no organism is spared from viral, bacterial, or eukaryotic parasites (fungi, protozoa, and metazoans). They colonize all ecosystems—aquatic (marine or freshwater), terrestrial, and aerial—and contribute significantly to biodiversity. Parasitic protozoa and metazoans cause human, animal, and plant diseases, with a considerable socio-economic impact. They affect more than one billion people worldwide, causing millions of deaths annually, particularly in Africa (e.g., malaria), and lead to reduced productivity or even mortality in livestock, as well as decreased yields in major crops. Other parasitic groups (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) are also highly diverse, ubiquitous, and responsible for diseases in all living organisms.

Admissions Information

This bachelor’s program provides a transversal and multidisciplinary education in General Parasitology, emphasizing a thorough understanding of the different pathogenic groups affecting humans (and economically important animals in the case of zoonoses) and the diversity of host–pathogen interactions in the living world. This knowledge forms an essential foundation for students wishing to specialize in these fields, which offer an inexhaustible source for fundamental research with applications primarily in human and veterinary medicine.

Students from the second year of the Biological Sciences program within the SNV field are eligible to enroll in this program.
